The Inserter Instrument, from Wennbergs Finmekaniska, is a uniquely designed gun that positions and inserts tantalum ball markers into bone, allowing RSA measurement to track the effectiveness of prostheses.
The drill is set to its firing position and a tantalum marker ball captured in the tip of the barrel. The balls can only be picked up and fired one at a time, making their positioning and insertion easy and reliable. The drill is inserted to the chosen depth and the trigger fires the ball approximately 4 mm into the bone. The whole instrument is then withdrawn from the bone, leaving the ball firmly in place.
